Morning in Pisa

Start your day early to make the most of your time in Pisa. Known worldwide for its iconic Leaning Tower, Pisa offers a wealth of architectural and historical treasures.

Piazza dei Miracoli

Begin your exploration at this UNESCO World Heritage site, home to:

  • The Leaning Tower of Pisa: Marvel at this architectural wonder and, if you’re feeling adventurous, climb its 294 steps for a panoramic view of the city. The tower, which began leaning during its construction due to a poorly laid foundation, is a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. Tip: It’s wise to book your tickets online in advance to skip the queues.
  • The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta: Admire the stunning Romanesque architecture and intricate artworks adorn this 11th-century cathedral.
  • The Baptistery of St. John: Discover the largest baptistery in Italy, renowned for its remarkable acoustics and Gothic design.
  • Camposanto Monumentale: Stroll through this historic cemetery, which is believed to have been built upon sacred soil from Golgotha.

Stroll Along the Arno River

After immersing yourself in the wonders of Piazza dei Miracoli, take a leisurely walk along the Arno River. Enjoy the picturesque views of historic buildings and bridges, including the Ponte di Mezzo, and let the serene beauty of the river relax you.

Lunch in Pisa

Indulge in authentic Tuscan cuisine at charming trattorias or osterias nearby. We recommend trying local specialities like ribollita (a hearty vegetable and bread soup) or pappa al pomodoro (tomato and bread soup), paired with a glass of regional Chianti wine.

Afternoon in Lucca

Hop on the train for a short ride to Lucca, a city that exudes medieval charm and is famed for its well-preserved Renaissance walls.

Walk or Cycle the City Walls

Begin your visit by exploring the tree-lined walls encircling the city. You can rent a bicycle or enjoy a pleasant walk while taking panoramic views of Lucca’s historic centre and surrounding countryside.

Explore the Historic Center

  • Piazza dell’Anfiteatro: Visit this unique oval square built on the remains of a Roman amphitheatre. It’s lined with cosy cafes and artisan shops—perfect for a coffee break or souvenir hunting.
  • Torre Guinigi: Climb this ancient tower crowned with oak trees for a breathtaking vista of the city’s red-tiled roofs.
  • San Michele in Foro: Admire the intricate façade of this Romanesque church, adorned with exquisite sculptures and detailing.
  • Lucca Cathedral (San Martino): Discover remarkable artworks, including the Holy Face of Lucca, a revered wooden crucifix.

Enjoy a Gelato or Espresso

Take a moment to relax at a local gelateria or café. Savour a scoop of gelato or a traditional Italian espresso as you watch the world go by in this enchanting city.

Evening Return to Levanto

As the afternoon winds down, make your way back to Levanto. The train journey from Lucca takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Upon your return, consider dining at one of Levanto’s restaurants, where you can indulge in fresh seafood dishes or traditional Ligurian cuisine. Or, if you're in the mood for a more casual meal, you can grab a slice of authentic Italian pizza from a local pizzeria. After dinner, you might want to enjoy a peaceful evening stroll along the beach.
