Autumn is an excellent time to discover Levanto and the Ligurian Riviera. The crowds of summer have faded, the air is fresh yet mild, and the sea still invites you for a swim. Whether you are here for hiking, cultural visits, or simply taking it easy by the water, Levanto in autumn offers something truly special.
Explore the Cinque Terre at their best
The Cinque Terre are beautiful at any time of year, but autumn gives them a quieter and more authentic atmosphere. The famous coastal paths are easier to walk without the summer heat, and the villages are less busy. You can take the train from Levanto or set off directly on foot for a memorable day among vineyards, olive groves and colourful houses.
Hiking in and around Levanto
Levanto itself has many hiking trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints, secluded coves and neighbouring villages. The trail to Monterosso is a classic, but there are also lovely routes towards Bonassola and Framura. In autumn, the temperatures are ideal for long walks, and the forests start to turn shades of gold and red.
Sea and beach without the crowds
The Ligurian Sea retains its warmth well into October, and many locals continue to swim until early November. On Levanto’s expansive beach, you can enjoy a peaceful day, take a book, or even try surfing, which is very popular in autumn when the waves are at their best.
Day trips to charming towns
Levanto is ideally placed for exploring more of Liguria and Tuscany. From here you can easily reach:
Camogli, San Fruttuoso and Portofino: a classic itinerary combining pastel-coloured houses, a hidden abbey by the sea and the glamour of Portofino. Ferries often run until late autumn; alternatively, you can travel by train and then by boat.
Genoa: the old port, the palaces of Via Garibaldi and the narrow caruggi are fascinating at any time of year. The city’s mix of history and contemporary life makes it an excellent day out.
The Gulf of Poets: from Lerici to Portovenere, this is one of Liguria’s most romantic stretches of coast, loved by writers like Shelley and Byron.
Pisa and Lucca: within easy reach by train, both cities make for rewarding day trips. Pisa is famous for its Leaning Tower, but it also boasts a lively university atmosphere. Meanwhile, Lucca charms with its intact walls, shady boulevards, and elegant squares.
Food and wine experiences
Autumn is harvest season, making it the perfect time to savour local wines and seasonal dishes. Try the white wines from the Cinque Terre, chestnut cakes from the inland valleys, and fresh seafood that remains a staple of Levanto’s restaurants. A visit to a vineyard or an olive oil mill can add a memorable local flavour to your stay.
A slower pace of life
The greatest gift of autumn is the chance to experience Levanto at a slower pace. You can stroll through the town, sit in a café, watch the fishing boats come and go, and enjoy the warm hospitality of the locals. The light of early evening is terrific in this season, painting the sea and the hills with soft colours.
